Council of State Rules that Income Earned Abroad Must Be Taxed Abroad

ste-3_5The Council of State has ruled that Greek citizens who work and pay taxes abroad should not pay income tax in Greece.
Greece’s highest administrative court decision that Greeks who work abroad should be taxed abroad came after an appeal of a Greek citizen.
The Greek national, who works as an architect in Germany, was asked by tax authorities to file a joint income tax declaration with his wife who lives in Greece for all their earnings, regardless of the country they were obtained. Since the man is already paying taxes to the German state, he appealed to the Council of State.
The crucial verdict resolves an issue that has been troubling thousands of Greeks who have been forced by the economic crisis to work abroad, leaving their families behind. It can serve as a precedent for thousands of similar cases of Greeks emigrating to work in other countries.
