The Greek police dismantled two smuggling rings involved in the transportation of 600 migrants from Turkey into Greece after a month-long investigation. A total of 29 people were arrested, including a police officer who was suspended pending an investigation for allegedly providing smugglers with information about police deployments in the areas where smugglers were working. Two other men who are suspected as being the heads of the two networks were also arrested.
The pick-up points were in the Evros border region before smugglers took refugees to Athens or Thessaloniki, northern Greece. One group is accused of having transported 400 people from December 2015 through to April 2015 and the second group transported 200 people from September to May.
The policeman was serving in Evros and is accused of providing information on police deployments there to the chief of the second smuggling ring.
