EU Finance Commissioner Arrives in Greece to Discuss Bailout Program

tsakalotos-moscovici_0European Commissioner for Financial Affairs Pierre Moscovici arrived in Athens on Monday to prepare the ground for talks on the implementation of the fiscal measures required for the second bailout program review.

Moscovici will meet with Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos to pave the way for expediting procedures for the evaluation that should be completed in October.
The two men will give a joint press conference at 3:15 pm. Prior to the press conference Moscovici will meet with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras at Maximos Mansion.
Athens hopes that the Commissioner will make a positive statement regarding debt relief. However, the main concern is the answer to Greek proposal for lower fiscal targets after 2018.
Specifically, the Greek government has asked for a targeted primary surplus of 2.5 percent in 2019 and 2 percent for 2020. According to Tsakalotos, the 3.5 percent primary surplus target set after 2018 is unrealistic. This position is in accord with the International Monetary Fund estimation that the target is too high.
