Acropolis Rally organizers applied for a return to the World Rally Championships (WRC) as of 2017. The national federation in association with the regional authority of Central Greece and the City of Lamia want Greece’s historic automobile event to return to the international car-racing circuit. They have submitted an application to FIA, the world governing body, in the hopes that the race can be included in next year’s calendar circuit after three years of being part of the European Rally Championship.
The plan submitted by the rally’s organizers provides for a four-day racing start with a super-stage within the Olympic Stadium of Athens conjuring memories of how things were a decade ago.
A decision is expected by FIA by the end of October.
