An Uncertain Future for Turkey Could See Dramatic Fall for Greece's 2017 Tourism Season

tourism in GreeceGreece’s unexpected and sudden increase in tourism for the month of July and August might just be a temporary situation, caused mostly to the crisis in Turkey, says the Association of Hellenic Tourism Enterprises (SETE).
As Greece sees an increase in the amount of conferences, corporate events and cruise destinations that have been a welcome sight for the financially stricken country, the president of SETE, Andreas Andreadis has issued a negative forecast for the 2017 tourism season, greatly influenced by the instability in Turkey.
Andreadis says that there are troubling signs that there are less foreign flights available for tourists to take to come to Greece in 2017, as well as a growing concern for the repercussions of the recent Brexit on the Greek tourism sector.
With terrorism also in the forefront of the thoughts for many people considering a European vacation in 2017, it is likely that numbers will drop in visitors across Europe as a whole.
Also, with growing instability in Turkey, it is unclear how that may impact the migrant crisis, as Turkey is a key factor in trying to regulate the influx of asylum seekers attempting to cross the Mediterranean to enter Europe via Greece.
All of these factors paint a less than welcoming picture for tourists wishing to come to Greece to enjoy their vacations and escape from their chaotic lives.
There is hope that after some time a sense of normal will return to the region and that the Greek tourism sector can bounce back stronger than ever. However, hotel association representatives believe that this will be a slow process.
