A man, aged 37, was sentenced to a year in prison and fined 5,000 euros by the Court of Misdemeanours for beating two dogs to death before setting them on fire in Serres, Macedonia. The dogs he killed were kept at the Municipal Shelter of Serres.
The man was a contract worker employed by the shelter. He was sentenced at noon on Monday and apart from the sentence and fine, he has been ordered to pay 30,000 euros per dog — that is, a total of 60,000 euros for the two animals he killed.
In the preliminary inquiry, the man had claimed that the two animals attacked him during feeding time. He says that he beat them to death with a stick in self-defence and then set them on fire.
His colleagues found the charred remains of the animals and reported the crime. The police also found drugs on the man for which he had no prescription.
