Greek Island Travel Interest Sparked by Plunging Air Fares

GREEKISLANDS
Kayak travel search engine found that searches for flights to Greek islands have soared with increases of more than 300 percent. Crete was amongst the most popular searches with a 345 percent spike in travel searches in spring 2016 from the year before, while Corfu was up by 238 percent.
The islands were among Kayak’s Flight Index Top 50 for the most sought-after destinations.  The interest was viewed as largely caused by the falling air fares, dropping by 62-67 percent in the past year.
Pisa, Italy, was also a Top 50 destination, ranking 23rd after a 55 percent drop in air fares, whereas Bali was at number 36 for the first time. Another new arrival to the Top 50 was Naples at number 47. Amongst the steepest increases was Reykjavik, Iceland, that climbed 39 places to the top five most popular after average air fares to the destination almost halved. Ibiza’s prices were slashed by 58 percent matched by searches increasing by 58 percent.
With fares dropping compared to last year, the average price to the 50 most searched for destinations had dropped on average by 22 percent.
