According to the AP, a group of protesters said to be anarchists burst into and disrupted mass at the Greek Orthodox Church of Gregory Palamas this Sunday.
The city’s archbishop who was at another church at the time of the protest, said that around 30 people caused the disruption at the Sunday mass and “destroyed what they could.” He did not elaborate any further on what damage may have been caused.
Riot police arrived shortly on the scene and so far they have arrested 26 individuals, including 19 women and seven men, 17 of which are Greek, the AP reported.
On Sunday the protest by the anarchists were fueled by an eviction procedure that took place on Wednesday, where anarchists and refugees were evicted from three illegally occupied buildings that are property of the Greek Orthodox Church and that are to be demolished by the church to build a hospice for the terminally ill.
On Wednesday some 74 anarchists were arrested by police, including 64 foreigners and 33 refugees. The 33 refugees were later released.
Other disruptions and protests on Sunday from the group included blowing up an improvised explosive device before dawn outside of the offices of the construction company hired to undertake the demolition procedures, but it did little damage.
