The Felony Appeals Court of Piraeus sentenced Giorgos Bourdouvalis to life imprisonment plus nine years as the broker of “Noor 1” ship that carried two tons of heroin.
Bourdouvalis — or Captain George as he was known in testimonies — was the captain of the ship that carried two tons of heroin from the United Arab Emirates to Elefsina, Greece in June 2014. The ship broker from Dubai also has to pay a fine of 600,000 euros.
The 42-year-old ship owner Makis Giannousakis was also found guilty of the crime of transporting two tons of heroin and was sentenced to life imprisonment plus eight years and is required to pay a fine of 300,000 euros.
Three Turkish nationals who were arrested in a warehouse in Koropi where the biggest part of the heroin was hidden, also received life imprisonment plus eight years and a 200,000-euro fine.
Constantinos Kartsonis, who was responsible for transporting the narcotics to the warehouse in Koropi was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment and a fine of 80,000 euros.
The Iranian man who was “escorting” the drugs was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment and a fine of 16,000 euros.
Emilios Kotsonis, Vasilis Kourouvanis and Panagiotis Faros, who were linked to the ownership, rental and commercial use of “Noor 1,” were sentenced to 10 years and 8 years imprisonment respectively.
Finally, Stavros Lagios, assistant to Gianousakis, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
The convicted men are expected to appeal.
