The Olympic Flame Arrives in Rio de Janeiro

OLY-2008-CEREMONY-TORCHThe Olympic flame arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Wednesday, August 3, after its 20,000 km tour around the world. The torch relay was completed in the presence of a large crowd that lined up to watch the arrival of the flame in Rio, the city that will host this year’s Olympic Games.
Thousands of people were able to witness the arrival, since it was live streamed through Periscope. The flame arrived in the city from Niteroi on sailboat, through a small channel that leads to Guanabara bay.
Mayor Eduardo Paes took the torch on its first laps through the Rio streets. The flame also took a ride on the recently inaugurated light rail and passed in front of the city’s century-old Municipal Theater.
The Olympic flame will now make its way to Maracana stadium for the opening ceremony, scheduled to take place on Friday.
The relay began on April 21 with the standard lighting ceremony in Ancient Olympia, Greece. While the torch’s tour through 300 cities has generally been smooth, it did spur an international outcry when authorities had to shoot a jaguar after the animal escaped from its handlers at a ceremony in the Amazon city of Manaus.
Also, when the flame arrived in the city of Joinville, a man attacked the torch-bearer with a fire extinguisher in an attempt to put out the flame.
