EU Anti-Terror Forces to Search for Jihadists in Migrant Camps in Greece

migrantsEuropol anti-terror experts are to travel to Greece in an effort to track would-be jihadists amongst the migrants stuck in the country’s camps, according to AFP, citing a Hellenic Police source.
The team is expected to be in Greece by the end of the month, as part of a cooperation program between Greek and European authorities and Europol. About 60,000 registered migrants and refugees – with many more estimated to be out of the grid – are stranded in Greece. Greek and European authorities suspect that Islamic State terrorists may be among them expecting to cross to northern Europe.
Some of the jihadists who carried out the November 2015 Paris attacks slipped into Europe by posing as refugees in Greece, generating fears that more could be using the migration crisis to do the same.
According to the AFP report, the Europol team, which will include Greek officers, will be tasked with identifying individuals who could be undergoing a process of radicalization.
The team will carry out checks in the camps where mostly Syrian, Iraqi and Afghan migrants and refugees are stranded in the hope that they will be able to move to more prosperous northern Europe.
Europol’s previous anti-terror controls have taken place at the “hotspot” migrant registration camps on the Greek islands near Turkey.
