Town of Karystos on Evia Island Sees More Wildfires, Houses Burned, Neighboring Village Evacuated (video)

karustos-fw3tia-708On Saturday residents of Evia island and specifically the town of Karystos on the island had to once again contend with wildfires.
Fire broke out at 8:05 a.m. local time in a woodland in the Karystos area. The operational center of the Lamia Fire Department was notified and strong aerial and ground forces rushed to the area.
The flames spread quickly due to the strong winds, which also forced the five firefighting airplanes to withdraw from the operation.
The fire went through the Porto Lafia seaside resort and reportedly burned two homes, while the settlement was evacuated. It is worth noting that Evia is one of the few Greek regions in central Greece where there was no rain on Saturday.
In the battle with the flames, 27 firefighting vehicles were employed with more than 65 firefighters and several volunteers.
