Greek Pension System to Buckle Under Weight of 360,000 Applications

550_334_429476Greece’s pension system is at risk as there are 360,000 pending applications for main pensions, supplementary pensions and retirement lump sums.
According to an Ethnos newspaper report, the pending applications that are stuck in the security funds’ drawers for three years constitute a hidden deficit, threatening to derail the whole pension system.
Economic analysts estimate that if security funds pay all their obligations to prospective retirees, they need 4.8 billion euros, Ethnos reports.
Ideally, the pension system would need 2.8 billion euros to somehow normalize the situation and delay issuing pensions by one year to 15 months, instead of three years.
Those who receive separate pensions from different funds or expect supplementary pensions are in the worst position because of communication difficulties between security funds.
