The number of national broadcasters will be reduced to four as planned by the government following the decision by the Council of State on Friday to reject nine requests for a suspension to the controversial TV license tender.
President of the Council of State, Nikos Sakellariou, rejected the request of the nine requests filed by seven companies bidding for the TV license tender. This means that the process can start next week.
Sakellariou also suspended rulings by the same court concerning the legality of the TV license tender and on whether some bidders meet the criteria necessary for participation for September 16 even though the competition for TV licenses will take place on Tuesday, August 30.
The verdict was reached after a 2-hour meeting behind closed doors that included the participation of state adviser Ilias Mazos and Supreme Court Judge Ourania Nikolarakou.
The decision follows last month’s rejection concerning a media appeal over the law passed in October to reduce the number of nationwide stations to four. The channels failed to have their motion passed.
