Turkish FM Cavusoglu Visits Crete, Wants to See Cave of Zeus

MELVUT
Turkish Foreign Minister MelvutĀ Cavusoglu met with his Greek counterpart Nikos Kotzias on the island of Crete on Sunday. The two men’s unofficial meeting took place at Crete’s luxury Elounda Resort and focused on bilateral relations and bilateral cooperation. This is Cavusoglu’s first visit to an EU country since the failed coup attempt in Turkey on July 15.
There was a great deal of speculation concerning the visit, held in response to an invitation extended by Kotzias two months earlier. A number of press reports claimed that the Turkish side would use the visit as an opportunity to press for the extradition of eight Turkish military officials that flew to Greece on a Turkish military helicopter and applied for political asylum in Greece in the wake of the coup.
The Turkish minister arrived at the meeting shortly before noon accompanied by tight security. Sources state that the Turkish official expressed the desire to visit Dikeon Andron cave, one of the most important of the 2,000 caves in Crete that was the birthplace of Zeus, according to Greek mythology.
His visit to the site will take place in the afternoon, prior to dinner at a tavern.
