Chief of Athens Traffic Police Giorgos Diamantopoulios was violently beaten by an attacker on Monday night after a protest rally in the capital’s center.
The incident took place a little before midnight, when Diamantopoulos — who was on duty in uniform — and a traffic policeman were near a protest rally in support of migrants in the corner of Panepistimiou and Benaki Streets. According to Greek police an individual who left the protest attacked him and left him bleeding.
The police chief was taken to 401 Army Hospital where he received treatment for his wounds. The assailant disappeared in the nearby Exarchia streets.
President of the Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos called Diamantopoulos on the telephone to ask about his health and wished him a fast recovery.
The attack caused the reaction of main opposition New Democracy as party lawmakers raised the issue of citizen safety, especially around the Exarchia area where violence is rampant. At the same time, a PASOK official statement calls for the resignation of Citizen Protection Deputy Minister Nikos Toskas.
