Serious Problems as Heavy Flooding Sweeps South of Greece

FLOOD
Torrential rain sweeping southern Greece has caused serious flooding in Lakonia after a dam burst on the Evrotas River, turning the surrounding area into a lake. Reinforcements have been sent from Athens, while efforts were underway to rescue people trapped by the rapidly rising flood water.
The fire brigade managed to rescue a man stuck in a tree using boats, while a helicopter has also been enlisted to assist in the operations. Rescue workers also successfully extricated 25 people, both customers and staff, stuck in a Lidl supermarket.
Reports said the village Elos, near Skala where the dam burst, was under threat from the river water heading its way.
Heavy rain is continuing to fall in Messinia, where General Secretary for Civil Protection Ioannis Kapakis has headed at the orders of Alternate Civil Protection Minister Nikos Toskas. The minister has also cancelled all his other engagements and is expected in the area on Wednesday afternoon to make statements and meet with local authorities.
