Self-Styled Anarchists Turn Exarchia Into a War Zone (Again)

The roads around the National Technical University of Athens (Polytechnic) were turned into a war zone again at dawn on Sunday as young anti-state rebels threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at policemen. The region where the violent episodes took place is known as Exarchia, a cesspool of anarchism near the city center, that often has episodes such as the ones that ran from 01:00 to 04:00 with burnt garbage bins and destruction of property.
The particular incident saw 50 youths attack two groups of riot police around Averof and Marnis streets as well as at the corner of Marnis Street and Patission Avenue. Traffic was cordoned away from these areas, and restored at around 04:00 after the police arrested two of the perpetrators.
The incidents are not unusual to a region where frequent conflicts between police, drug dealers and self-styled anarchists take place. The recent attacks come in the wake of a decision by bus and trolley operator (OSY) to indefinitely ban buses from driving through sections of Exarchia when they do not have passengers on board. The decision came as a result of a growing number of arson attacks against vehicles in the region. Drivers were told to avoid Eikostis Ogdois Oktovriou Street, from Alexandras Avenue to Halkondili Street, and Solonos Street, beginning from the crossing with Ippokratous to Triti Septemvriou Street.
