Greek Parliament Committee on Transparency Calls TV License Tenderers and State Minister

kanalarxes-neoi-708_2The Special Permanent Committee on Institutions and Transparency of the Greek Parliament has called the four tenderers of the recent television licensing auction and State Minister Nikos Pappas to testify.
Despite her initial refusal, the president of the committee, Tasia Christodoulopoulou, decided to call the minister responsible for the auction and the four license owners after numerous requests from opposition parties. Parliament regulations dictate that when two fifths of a committee request the summoning of certain individuals for questioning, the president has to comply.
Opposition lawmakers have challenged the legality of the auction, the process, and the audit of the assets of the four tenderers. In addition, they consider that the auction was unconstitutional because it was not done by the independent authority of the National Radio and Television Council. In addition, station owners who are currently in operation and have not been granted a license, have appealed to the Council of State, Greece’s highest administrative court. The court’s decision is pending.
Opposition leaders and MPs have also accused the government of preferential treatment of Christos Kalogritsas, one of the new license owners, who doesn’t seem to have the necessary assets to pay for the license.
Yiannis Alafouzos, Vangelis Marinakis, Christos Kalogritsas and Theodoros Kyriakou will appear before the committee and testify for the auction procedures and their assets. Pappas will answer questions regarding the procedure and the auditing of the assets of the license owners.
There will be two hearings, one month apart from each other. Only the president of the committee and three opposition lawmakers have the right to question the tenderers, as per parliamentary regulations.
