Kammenos Sides With Church in Keeping Catechism-Based Religion Classes in Schools

panos-kammenosEarlier this week Education Minister Nikos Filis stated that religious classes in public schools should be taught in a context of a religious studies course, rather than basing teachings on catechism.
On Friday the leader of the junior coalition partner, Panos Kammenos stated that the Independent Greeks (ANEL) political party is backing the Church of Greece in this matter, which is insisting that the religious programs stay as-is and that changing them is dangerous to the fabric of society.
“The Independent Greeks (ANEL) publicly backs the views of the Church with regard to religion courses in school,” an ANEL party statement said on Friday.
Archbishop Ieronymos is set to meet with Kammenos on Wednesday to further discuss the issue before it is scheduled to be presented to parliament.
