MRB Hellas Poll Shows Greeks Discontent in Government Handling of Television Licenses

TV-broadcasters-greeceThe government-run tender for television licensesĀ in Greece has been under much scrutiny since the plans were first announced.
However, once everything is said and done and just when you would expect things to calm down, there is even more controversy and social discontent over the distribution of the permits, according to STAR TV, one of the losing bidders in the tender.
According to a recent poll that the Greek Statistical Service, MRB Hellas, conducted on behalf of Star TV from September 20-21, 74.2 percent, or 7 out of 10 Greeks were not satisfied with how the government handled the license tender.
Also 76.7 percent of those surveyed said that the auction would not put an end to corruption in media nor curb under-the-table dealings while 82.8 percent were not happy with the lacking of background checks on the bidders involved.
The end result of the tender that was initiated by the SYRIZA government saw the existing eight licenses reduced to four in a controversially seen move to root out corruption in the media sector.
