A group of citizens called Collectives Against Auctions on Wednesday clashed with police inside a Thessaloniki court and stopped the hearing for the foreclosure of the house of a disabled man.
The group of protesters stormed the courtroom during the foreclosure hearing carrying banners and shouting slogans against foreclosures and auctions, against the government and the police. Riot police arrived on the spot and stood in front of the bench.
Soon people started throwing bottles of water at police, who pushed the crowd using their shields. Among the protesters were members of the Popular Unity party. The judge was forced to stop the hearing.
According to one protester who spoke on Alpha TV, the person whose house is to be auctioned has a family of six. He had taken a business loan for 300,000 euros and his business went bankrupt. He also owes 80,000 to the social security fund. After a stroke and a heart attack, he became 85% disabled. The man also claimed that one of his children is disabled as well.
