Turkish Foreign Minister Plays Down Erdogan's Comments on Lausanne Treaty and Greek Islands

cavusoglu-thumb-large“All countries have to abide by their international agreements and treaties, whether they like it or not,” said Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in an effort to play down a previous comment by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Erdogan had said previously that the Lausanne Treaty in 1923 was defeat for Turkey. The treaty, signed by most European powers, had decided the sovereignty of many Aegean Sea islands that now belong to Greece.
The Cavusoglu statement came in response to a question by New Democracy MP Dora Bakoyanni at the Council of Europe.
“That does not mean that someone cannot express their opinion about how correct or justified these agreements were,” said the Turkish foreign minister. “This is no threat against Greece or any other country,” he added.
