State Council Finally Meets Amid Controversy, Throws Out TV Injunction Petitions

council of state
The Council of State plenum, Greece’s Supreme Court, threw out three petitions for injunctions filed in connection with a television license tender procedure aimed at limiting nationwide TV licenses to four. The decision was reached in the council’s third plenum after previous meetings were disrupted for various reasons. This time, however, the judges were able to debate the appeals of the TV channels behind closed doors on Tuesday afternoon in a meeting that began at 5 p.m..
The 30 judges had to vote on the constitutionality of the TV license procedure and examine the applications of Alpha and Skai as well as Alter Ego and ITV CP for interim measures on the wealth declarations of participants in the tender.
The injunctions that had been filed by televisions stations Alpha, Star and Cyprus-based ITV CP, were thrown out after a decision reached in a session with State Council President Nikolaos Sakellariou presiding over the meeting. The reasoning for the decision reached will be published over the coming days.
The politically explosive meeting was met with controversy with disruptions such as bomb hoaxes and judges’ resignations. At Tuesday’s meeting there were more obstacles as one full member of the court plenum suffered a heart attack while an alternate member reported a broken leg on Crete and cited medical leave as a reason not to attend.
Email Investigation
The Union of Judges and Prosecutors and the Union of Administrative Judges on Tuesday demanded an investigation into how the private emails of a senior Council of State judge, involved in the consideration of cases related to the TV license tender, were leaked to the media. The unions asked for action to be taken following the violation of the judge’s privacy.
