Karystos, a small coastal town on the island of Evia, celebrated the Greek public holiday of October 28, 1940, in its own special way with a unique parade like no other. The event, transported onlookers back decades to another era when Greek dictator Ioannis Metaxas said “Ohi” (No) to the Italians, essentially marking Greece’s entry to World War Two.
Members of the cavalry arrived wearing period costumes and uniforms from 1940. They passed by on mules carrying supplies to the front lines and causing the crowds to cheer.
Photographer George Lykouropoulos took photographs that matched the spirit of the parade.
