A children’s story inspired by the true story of Marathon champion Maria Polyzou will be coinciding with the Athens Authentic Marathon to take place on November 13. The fairy tale, titled “A Giant Called M.P.” is written by Magda Costopoulou-Beriou and is being published in both Greek and English to coincide with the annual event set to take place on Saturday.
The book is bound to charm adults as much as children who are guided through the athlete’s life as she manages to run her way to the top. The book centers on sports ideals and children learn about this one woman’s effort and willpower as they, too are encouraged to dare to dream. Polyzou’s run from Athens to Sparta and then back to Marathon in 2010 made her the only woman since antiquity to manage to complete Pheidippidis feat.
The book is available at the Runner Store in Golden Hall (37A Kifissias Avenue, Maroussi). It will also be available at the Athens Marathon Expo at the Tae Kwon Do Olympic facility at Faliro from November 10. Part of the proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated towards the NGO “Orama Elpidas” and help create the Volunteer Bone Marro Donor Registry.
