Restoration of Acropolis Not Impacted By Financial Crisis, Officials Say

The Acropolis in Athens, Greece.
The restoration of Athens’ Acropolis is an ongoing and important national project, according to Vassiliki Eleftheriou, director of the Acropolis Restoration Service.
While speaking on Thursday, Eleftheriou stated that there are many challenges in the restoration and preservation of the centuries-old cultural relics atop the Acropolis hill.
One of the biggest challenges is that the ruins remain open to the public year-round, so restoration efforts have to work around crowds of thousands of tourists who tour the Acropolis each day which slows down the work of construction and archaeologists working on site considerably.
Also, finding the materials needed to restore the relics is an important task for the Acropolis Restoration Service. The marble they use is quarried from the same mountain as in antiquity.
Due to funding from the EU and Greek government, the restoration project of the Acropolis hasn’t felt the impact of the financial crisis hitting Greece.
“Funding has never been a major problem. The Greek state always supported us. This is a national treasure and its protection is a national goal, a matter of national priority,” Eleftheriou said.
