As predicted, the fiasco of the Bi-zonal, Bi-Communal Federation negotiations in Switzerland have collapsed and we can now take a breath of relief. The Republic of Cyprus remains so!
It finally dawned on the government and our petty-politicians that one cannot negotiate with Turkey or the Turkish Cypriot leadership and expect to honor anything that either of them promises. You shake hands with them only to discover afterwards that a couple of your fingers are missing!
Sultan Erdogan is a very dangerous man and he did not allow the TC leadership to make a deal unless it served Turkey’s objections. It is of no wonder each time the talks started, Akinci stopped to take instructions from Erdogan before going to Switzerland or during the talks, he kept going to the bathroom every so often to make his clandestine calls.
Personally, I am pleased the entire fiasco has come to an end, forcing the Cypriot leadership — primarily the DISY/AKEL parties and staunch supporters of a BBF — to re-think the entire situation and how the apartheid-style BBF would not work because it is designed and meant NOT to work.
As mentioned many times over before there was NEVER a PLAN B to deal with the failure of the talks, yet, so confident they were to sign a deal! The president confirmed that last night also confirming that he does not have and does not want a PLAN B either. This indicates that the political Cypriot leadership lives in a mythical Koo-Koo land believing that Turkey would seriously budge and make an honorable agreement.
I must also respect the fact that President Anastasiades came back this time from Switzerland without a statement (unlike his famous Bail-in excuse) that “they held a gun to my head.”
Time for a re-think and time to drop this BBF charade permanently! The BBF has been proven to be a clever trap made to destroy the Republic of Cyprus, partition the country and legalize Turkey’s occupation of the island.
