Ed Min Baxevanakis: Sit-ins by a Small Group of Students Should No Longer Be Tolerated

baxevanakhsThe Deputy Education Minister, Dimitris Baxevanakis, has taken to criticizing the efforts of students who occupy themselves with sit-ins in protest against various issues.
On Friday Baxevanakis told Parliament that students who participate in sit-ins are in the minority and should not be able to shut down an entire school, stating: “It is not considered a student mobilization when three, five or 10 of them shut down a school, defying the will of the majority of students.” He also mentioned that the majority of sit-ins occur without first being voted on by the student body.
According to sources, the MP said to Parliament that he believes by allowing such sit-ins to take place and disrupt student life, society is sending the wrong message to students, stating that it cultivates illusion in the youth that participating in sit-ins is a noble struggle.
He said that the sit-ins should no longer be tolerated and that schools should not be caving in to the “small minority of students” who should no longer be “told what they want to hear.”
