The Greek newspaper Kathimerini has published an interview with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier where the foreign envoy told them that the terms of the Treaty of Lausanne, which determine the modern-day borders of Greece and Turkey, are set in stone as international laws.
He stressed that amidst the territorial claims and veiled threats to unleash some 3 million refugees into the EU, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has upheld his side of the migration deal thus far, although there is still need for concern and to continue addressing these issues.
The foreign minister also added that there are benefits in store for Turkey if it maintains their side in the EU-Turkey migrant deal, saying that Ankara stands to benefit by upholding their end of the deal.
On a different topic, Steinmeier also mentioned during the interview that Berlin has been a great ally to Athens in tackling the migrant crisis and was the first EU country to send aid to assist the migrant reception centers in Greece.
He was also hopeful that the impasse with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) supporting the third bailout for Athens would be resolved soon, saying that he felt the progress that Athens has made in reforms was impressive.
The German foreign minister was in Greece on Sunday and Monday for talks on current issues and the inauguration of an exhibition in Thessaloniki.
