Former ELSTAT Chief Georgiou Acquitted for Criminal Breach of Duty

ELSTAT_GeorgiouA three-member misdemeanors court found the former head of Greeceā€™s statistics agency ELSTAT innocent of the charge of criminal breach of duty following a marathon hearing session on Tuesday that lasted five hours.
Andreas Georgiou was accused of keeping his job at the International Monetary Fund — where he had been working for years — for a few months after taking over his post at ELSTAT.
He had also been accused of not convening ELSTATā€™s board of directors, as he was required by law. The court rejected all the claims.
A separate case against him on whether or not he deliberately inflated the countryā€™s deficit in 2009 to push the country into signing a bailout deal is being discussed at the Appeals Council. The court initially acquitted him of the charge but the Supreme Court appealed it, so the case returned to the Council.
