A three-member misdemeanors court found the former head of Greeceās statistics agency ELSTAT innocent of the charge of criminal breach of duty following a marathon hearing session on Tuesday that lasted five hours.
Andreas Georgiou was accused of keeping his job at the International Monetary Fund — where he had been working for years — for a few months after taking over his post at ELSTAT.
He had also been accused of not convening ELSTATās board of directors, as he was required by law. The court rejected all the claims.
A separate case against him on whether or not he deliberately inflated the countryās deficit in 2009 to push the country into signing a bailout deal is being discussed at the Appeals Council. The court initially acquitted him of the charge but the Supreme Court appealed it, so the case returned to the Council.
