Greek Healthcare Facilities Lack Official 'Medical Error Log' to Record Deaths

doctorsEvery year, 98,000 people die every year from medical errors in the Western world, however, in Greece there is no official medical error log and therefore no data on deaths.
“Medical errors in the specialties of surgery, pediatrics and pathology in our country is the result of several factors,” the scientific head of the European research program Organizational Culture and Patient Safety, and assistant professor of AUTH Medical School, Evharis Panagopoulos told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA).
The publishing of the of the program for Organizational Culture and Patient Safety showed that in the unit for “Factors of Preventing Medical Errors” none of the participating hospitals in Greece had a formal medical error log.
The report showed that 47% to 51% of respondents at the facilities said that they made at least one mistake in the last month, while 4% to 5% of healthcare practitioners reported that they made four or more errors in the same time period.
Also, in all three disciplines (surgery, pediatrics and pathology) the errors were mainly the result of poor or inadequate teamwork. It was found that women make fewer mistakes than men and more experienced doctors make more errors than the inexperienced ones.
