health7Protesting public health system workers shut the entrance of the ministry of health premises by building a cement tile wall and posting a sign saying “We have moved to Brussels.”
Doctors, nurses and public hospital staff found this inventive way to protest government policies and the spending cuts the that have brought the understaffed public hospitals at the brink of collapse, and their benefit cuts and high taxation.
“Since all decisions are taken in Brussels, there’s no need for a ministry here. Hospital patients die every day. All that is left here is the arrogance of (Deputy Health Minister) Mr. Polakis,” said the president of the public hospital employees union (POEDIN) Mihalis Giannakos to Skai television reporters.
“We need permanent staff and during the SYRIZA-ANEL administration, hospital staff has been reduced by 7,500 people,” Giannakos added.
Deputy Health Minister Pavlos Polakis had stated previously that hospitals in cities and towns other than Athens are overstaffed by mostly lazy employees.
