Greek Police Dismantle Bulgarian Baby Smuggling Ring

Greek police have busted a Bulgarian criminal ring that was smuggling babies into Greece and selling them.
According to a police statement, six arrests were made in Katerini, northern Greece on Wednesday. The baby smugglers were taking infants from low-income mothers they were locating in Bulgaria and then selling them in the region of Attica or in northern Greece. The price per baby was 6,000-8,000 euros.
The smugglers were bringing the future mothers to the Pieria region and the babies were delivered in Pieria clinics. Then they were taking the babies and selling them to childless Greek families.
The ring was operating for at least three years. It was found that in the period between October 2013 to May 2015, the perpetrators were involved in 13 cases of illegal adoptions, in parts of northern Greece and Attica. Investigations involved testimonies of at least 13 biological mothers aged between 23 and 44.
