ND's Mitsotakis Says SYRIZA Government Is Two-Faced, Calls FinMin’s Letter to Creditors ‘Contemptible’

The opposition leader, Kyriakos Mitsotakis from the New Democracy (ND) party is accusing the SYRIZA government of being two-faced following a letter sent by Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos addressed to international creditors.
During an interview on Alpha radio as well as on his Twitter account, Mitsotakis referred to the SYRIZA government as “putting on a show of force domestically and then apologizing abroad,” adding, “It’s a performance that just won’t wash.”
In the letter it is reported that Finance Minister Tsakalotos specifically addressed the Christmas bonus that the Greek government decided to grant to low-income pensioners without first consulting its international lenders as a one-time deal that will not be repeated.
The finance minister also addressed the government’s recent decision to suspend raising the VAT on a number of Aegean islands that have been negatively impacted by the migrant crisis, saying that the VAT freeze would only apply for 2017.
“I hope that these clarifications reassure the Eurogroup of our full commitment to remain compliant with our obligations under the MoU, both as regards the substance as well as the process of cooperation with our partners,” Tsakalotos wrote in the letter.
Mistotakis said that the letter was “contemptible,” adding that SYRIZA is “condemning the country to prolonged austerity.”
