Captain Grigoris Pavlakis, the Last Greek War Hero From D-Day Has Died

The last Greek hero of the Normandy landing, Captain Grigoris Pavlakis, has died at age 95.
The Captain was originally from Crete and participated in the most famous and biggest allied effort against Germany. He was the chief officer of the corvette Kriezis, which was one of six Greek ships anchored in the seas of Egypt.
Back in 2001 the war hero did an interview with the Greek newspaper Kathimerini in which he modestly reflected on his role in D-Day saying “Our only hope was the joyful thought that if the operation succeeded, Greece would be freed from the bonds of slavery.”
In all the captain earned 15 medals in his navy career and in 2004 he was honored with France’s Legion of Honor.
Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday at 2 pm at Athens First Cemetery and are open to the public.
