On Friday, CNN Turk reported that the Turkish Authorities have issued new demands to Greece for the extradition of the eight Turkish officers that fled Turkey following the failed military coup last July.
Turkey’s Foreign Ministry reacted to the Supreme Court’s decision in Greece which was made yesterday, denying the extradition of the eight soldiers saying that Ankara would use “all legal instruments against this decision of the Greek judiciary,” adding that, “the implications on our bilateral relations, our cooperation against terrorism and other common cooperation in bilateral/multilateral matters of this decision, which we consider has been taken for political motives, will also be comprehensively evaluated.”
The Greek Supreme Court denied the extradition of the soldiers, stating that their rights were at risk of “being violated or reduced regardless of the degree of guilt or the gravity of the crimes they are accused of.”
There has been fear among Greek authorities handling the case that once returned to Turkey, the eight officers will not be privy to a fair trial, as in the months following the failed military coup attempt in Turkey, the country’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been on a rampage arresting all who he feels opposes him.
