Migrant Hides in Suitcase to Leave Lesvos

A 41-year-old Syrian woman was arrested on Thursday for hiding her undocumented 23-year-old son in a suitcase in order to leave Lesvos island for Athens.
Specifically, the Syrian refugee, who holds an international protection card and has the right to leave Lesvos, boarded the ‘Ariadne’ ship shortly before 8 pm with destination the Piraeus Port. Her other, also undocumented, 24-year-son was carrying her heavy suitcase to help.
However, when the coast guard officers checked the woman’s luggage found her other son hidden inside. All three Syrian natives were arrested.
Refugees and migrants who seek asylum are obligated to remain at the point of entry for the time period their application is processed. Coast guard officers say that migrants use many inventive, yet illegal, ways to leave the island. On Saturday, a migrant tried to get aboard a ship climbing the rope tying it to the dock. Also, almost on a daily basis, coast guard men discover migrants hiding in cars and trucks to be ferried to Piraeus.
