On Monday authorities made the official inauguration of a waste transfer station in Efkarpia, Thessaloniki, amidst protests by locals.
The opening of the waste station has been long-awaited by authorities who originally had the contract drawn up for the project back in 2010. However, protests by locals and Pavlos Melas Municipality officials who all claimed that the site for the facility was located too close to residential areas held up the construction.
The facility is set up to process 400,000 tons of waste annually and is expected to receive around 240,000 tons annually, ekathimerini.com reports.
