Former Defense Minister Tsochatzopoulos Released From Prison Due to Ill Health

A Greek court on Wednesday ruled that former defense minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos should be released from prison on account of ill health.
The 77-year-old former politician was serving a 20-year sentence for money laundering in 2013. His health deteriorated during his incarceration at Korydallos Prison and as a result he had triple bypass surgery last month. Tsochatzopoulos had often petitioned for his release for medical reasons.
A prosecutor had asked for his release arguing that Tsochatzopoulos’ further stay in prison “would cause irreparable damage” to his health. The court accepted the request by a majority of three to two.
