Turkey Says Cyprus' Hydrocarbon Exploitation of Certain Sea Plot Is Cause of War

A document Turkey submitted to the United Nations on April 12 characterizes the search and exploitation of sea Plot 6 of Cyprus‘ exclusive economic zone as a casus belli.
The particular plot of the Cypriot EEZ is operated by the Italian-French consortium Eni and Total. The issue of the Turkish document that will be published in the United Nations Law of the Sea bulletin was first reported on mignatiou.com news website. According to the document, Turkey claims Plot 6 as its own and threatens war against the Republic of Cyprus and Eni and Total companies.
Specifically, the Turkish document does not merely challenge the Cypriot EEZ but expresses an explicit claim to Lot 6 as part of the Turkish continental shelf.
Turkey’s UN Representative Feridun Sinirlioglu talked about a “provocative action of the Greek Cypriot administration that gave the permit for exploration and extraction of hydrocarbons from Plot 6, which is partly within the outer limits of the Turkish continental shelf in the Eastern Mediterranean.”
The document says that Ankara is “committed to protecting its sovereign rights deriving from international law and will not allow foreign companies to carry out unauthorized hydrocarbon exploration and mining activities within its own continental shelf.”
