Greek President Hails Athens University as ‘Beacon of Intellectual Life’

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is a “beacon of intellectual life” in Greece since its establishment, president Prokopis Pavlopoulos said on Wednesday, speaking at an event to mark the 180th anniversary of its founding.
“The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is a real beacon of our intellectual life in the difficult times we are living in. Its emblematic contribution to the intellectual life and the general political, economic and cultural life of the country consists in the timeless service of the double values of tradition and renewal,” he said.
Pavlopoulos spoke extensively of the university’s long history noting it follows that of the Greek state. “The course of the new Greek state is parallel to the history of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens [?] It was the first and only university in the country until 1926, when the Aristotle university of Thessaloniki was founded,” he added.
