Crisis Leads Greeks to Inexpensive Traditional Drinks

The ongoing economic crisis and new excise taxes on spirits has led many Greeks to the consumption of inexpensive traditional Greek spirits such as ouzo, raki and tsipouro.
According to research conducted by the Greek Documentation and Monitoring Center for Narcotics (EKTEPN) more drinkers in Greece turn to ouzo, tsipouro and raki as they are more affordable and have also become the preferred drinks of alcoholics.
In 2015, tsipouro or raki was the preferred drink for nearly one-third of those suffering from alcohol dependence, compared to 21.7 percent in 2011, according to EKTEPN.
Whiskey, vodka and cognac were the drinks of choice for 16 percent of alcoholics in 2015, compared to 27.1 percent in 2011, the research shows.
