Municipal Worker Unionists Occupy Greek Ministry of Interior Headquarters

Protesters of the municipal workers union POE-OTA occupied the Ministry of the Interior on Monday, demanding to meet with the minister over the permanent hiring of contract workers.
The sit-in did not last for more than an hour as shortly before 10 am the protesters left the premises after receiving the promise that they will meet with Interior Minister Panos Skourletis on Tuesday at noon.
Around 9 am, about 80 contract municipal workers managed to enter the ministry building and go up to the third floor, asking that they meet with the minister. Their demand is that the government fulfills an earlier promise that all contract municipal workers will be hired permanently.
Meanwhile, municipal workers have occupied the garbage truck stations as of Monday morning. They demand that no contract cleaners should be dismissed after their contracts expire.
The sit-in at the garbage truck stations will continue through Thursday and no trash will be picked up for the next four days.
Also, POE-OTA has announced a 24-hour Pan-Hellenic strike for all local government employees on Monday. Municipal workers held a rally at 10:30 am outside the union offices at Karaiskakis Square in central Athens.
