Greek Shipowners Extend Voluntary Deal to Pay Additional Tax in 2018

The Union of Greek Shipowners (USG) approved a proposal by its president Theodoros Veniamis on Monday, to extend an agreement with the State to make a voluntary tax contribution in 2018.
The exact size of the one-off payment was not specified but Veniamis expressed the view that there will soon be “a mutually acceptable agreement” between the State and the European Commission on the issue, which will “respect the fundamental principles of the institutional framework of Greek shipping and, above all, its constitutional safeguarding.”
The deal was first signed in 2014 and concerned the period until 2017, over which shipowners would pay 430 million euros in taxes. It concerned Greek-flagged freighters or ships with foreign flags managed by Greek shipping companies, or by foreign companies based in the country.
