Authorities Planning to Clean Out Prostitution and Drugs From Athens' Pedion tou Areos Park

Attica Regional Governor Rena Dourou spoke at a press conference on Tuesday where she announced that regional authorities are planning on cleaning up Pedion tou Areos park in central Athens, which is currently under siege by prostitutes and drug users.
According to Dourou, a private firm has been hired to guard the park for the time being, until an international tender is announced for the sanitation of the park.
“We are light-years away from having a European park,” Dourou noted at the press conference. She added that events such as cultural events will be coordinated to attract the public to use the park in constructive and positive ways in the future.
The Organization Against Drugs OKANA and Therapy Center for Dependent Individuals (KETHEA) have also become involved in saving the park and its addicts by setting aside 776,433 euros in regional authority funds to help encourage treatment and discourage drug users from going to the park.
