Opposition Slams Appointment of Retired Supreme Court President in Greek PM's Legal Office

Opposition parties have reacted strongly to the appointment of retired Supreme Court president Vassiliki Thanou as head of the prime minister’s legal office, without pay.
The announcement of the appointment caused immediate reactions, as Thanou retired on June 30 and only 10 days later she was placed in a political office.
Earlier, Thanou had asked for the retirement age of Supreme Court judges to be extended to 70 years instead of 67. Her request was rejected by the general judicial body.
The former Supreme Court president had served as caretaker Prime Minister of Greece from August 27 to September 21, 2015, in the run-up to the September 20, 2015 elections.
Main opposition New Democracy called Thanou’s appointment “a black page for democracy.” The official statement also said that “for this government, the concept of separation of powers is practically non existent.”
“Not even false pretenses before the end. The V. Thanou appointment is a sign of collapse and decline,” Democratic Coalition spokesperson Andreas Loverdos wrote in Twitter.
To Potami issued an official statement saying, inter alia, that “Once again, it turns out that SYRIZA-ANEL have no self-restraint and they are completely indifferent to what is the foundation of a democratic state, namely the division of powers.”
