NGOs Prepare to Hand Over Migrant Camps to Greek Gov't, Express Concerns

As NGOs prepare to hand over the responsibilities of running migrant camps on the Greek islands to the government of Greece on August 1, they have begun to express concerns over various issues.
According to a joint statement by seven of the top NGOs working in the hot spots of the Greek islands, the handing over of the camps to the Greek government raises specific concerns regarding the future plans of the Greek authorities in how they will continue to provide for the migrants residing at the camps. The NGOs’ joint statement expressed that they are looking to the Greek government to communicate a plan of action to them before the handover scheduled in just over a month’s time.
“Without a transitional plan, vulnerable men, women and children will be put at greater risk,” the joint statement said.
Currently there are some 14,000 migrants stranded on the Greek islands.
