European Commission Examining Third-Party Levies on Computers and Tablets in Greece

The bailout agreementĀ in Greece declares that all third-party levies in the country will be reduced until finally abolished completely leadingĀ the European Commission to begin looking into the 2 percent levy the government continues to impose on computers and tablets with a RAM memory that exceeds 4 GB. This is a law that the Greek government recently reintroduced after it had been abolished back in 2002.
On Monday, Margaritis Schinas, a commission spokesman said that Brussels is investigating this specific third-party levy to see if it complies with the outline of the bailout. Also stressed by SchinasĀ is that this situation will be resolved before European Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici visits Athens next Tuesday,Ā according to ekathimerini.com.
The levy in Greece was introduced by the Culture Ministry at a 1 percent tax and was then adjusted to 2 percent by Minister Lydia Koniordou who also removed the levy from smartphones.
