As Heatwave Persists, Conditions Worsen for Evzones Guards

The prolonged heatwave plaguing the country and the capital in particular, causes all sorts of problems for Athenians. Those suffering more -and in silence- though, are stray animals and the Evzones in Syntagma square.
The fustanella-wearing guards standing in front of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma square are expected to emulate toy soldiers, staying absolutely still at all times. For them, the heat is particularly unbearable.
So the images of some soldiers wiping the Evzones’ sweat off of their faces is absolutely essential to their performance and duty.
The heatwave in Greece is prolonged this week with temperatures rising up to 41 degrees Celsius.
High temperatures will be recorded mainly in the Ionian Sea and the mainland regions, reaching up to 39 degrees in Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly and Eastern Peloponnese.
In Athens, the weather will be hot, with temperature reaching up to 38 degrees Celsius.
In Thessaloniki there will be scarce clouds at midday and afternoon, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 38 degrees Celsius.
